Employee’s actions outside of work

Thursday 2 August, 2018

In some situations, an employee’s actions outside of work can risk their dismissal. This is if their actions can be linked back to their work, and cause concern for their employer. The link cannot be trivial. It has to be a link that has an impact on the job or the employer. No other reasons are valid.

Examples of actions bringing an employer into disrepute are: negative representation of an employer on social media, criminal actions that publicly damage the employer’s reputation, or sexual harassment of another employee outside the workplace.

When an employee’s actions outside of work bring the employer into disrepute a disciplinary process may follow. This disciplinary process still needs to be fair. For more information read our article on the disciplinary process.
